Many people
have heard of SAC, but have no idea what it is that SAC does
for the school or even why SAC exists,
if we have a PTSO. The School Advisory Committee is your
organization. Its purpose is to enhance educational programs,
the support services, and quality of life for our children who
are students in the DoD Dependent School at Geilenkirchen. We
work in concert with the PTSO.
SAC's are required in all DoDDS schools, by congressional
mandate, established by Public Law, to advise the principal on
school matters and the military unit commander on logistical
support matters. The committee includes parents, teachers,
the school principal, and the school liaison officer, who represents
the local military commander.
The SAC advises the principal regarding school polices
and administrative procedures, student activities, standards
of conduct and discipline, instructional programs and educational
resources within the school, and allocation of school resources.
SAC does not make school policy; we are an advisory body only
and deal strictly with matters of general concern.
As your representative
to the school and DoDDS administration, our goals focus on continuous
improvement of all aspects of the
school educational and support programs. We have open and
honest communication with the school administration and the U.S.
support structure. We welcome you to our open SAC meetings
and invite your suggestions for school improvement and your participation
on various subcommittees.
Our meetings
are normally held on the first Monday of each month in the school
library (bldg 93-A) at 1515 hrs. All
parents, school staff, and local military community personnel
are invited to attend. We publish our minutes after every
meeting in the school office and on the school web site, (www.gkschool.com)
follow the link to "Parent Center" and open the SAC web site. You
will find the PTSO site at this location as well. If you
have any concerns please contact a SAC member. At
the end of every school year, the SAC holds elections for vacant
positions
for the next year. SAC terms last
for two years with one half of the council being replaced every
year to ensure an adequate turnover of personnel. After
next year's council has been elected, the council elects the
year's officers (chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, and
parliamentarian) in a closed executive session.
If you are concerned about the future of the school,
and want to volunteer a small portion of your time doing something
extremely worthwhile and rewarding, why not consider running
for SAC? You can make a difference! |
