| All students
enrolled in the Geilenkirchen Elementary School meet with the
music teacher bi-weekly. Twice classes come for General Music. General
Music includes introducing the students to basic musical
concepts such as the expressive qualities of dynamics and tempo,
tone
color of voices and various instruments, steady beat, meter and rhythm,
reading simple melodies off the music staff, listening for and
discovering
the design of music: form and texture. |
|
| This is all
presented through songs from not only the United States, but also
many other cultures from around the world and other classical pieces.
In addition to General Music, students are given the option on Music
Fridays to learn to play quite a few instruments: Third
and Fourth graders may choose to learn to play the first
wind instrument called the recorder. This is quite a challenge for
the children as they must have good finger dexterity and be willing
to practice every day at home! The school has recorders that the students
may borrow. |
|
Fifth
and Sixth graders may choose to learn to play the guitar.
The school has a limited amount of guitars that the students may borrow
so they may practice daily at home.
Students who participate in Music Friday are dismissed for 45 minutes
from their regular classes to attend Music Friday Class. Fourth,
Fifth and Sixth graders may also choose to learn to play
flute, clarinet, or alto saxophone.
However, the school does not have these instruments for the students
to borrow. It is up to the parents to buy or rent the instrument and
book for their child. |

These students are taught not only
during the school day, but in the past have also met as a Beginning
Band after school twice on Music Weeks. Chorus
has been an after school activity in the past. Chorus is open to
all boys and girls that like to sing in grades 3 through 6. Past
years
the GKES Chorus has sung at the Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Spring
Recital. |
