Four Blocks Word Wall...

| |
Four blocks is
a language arts framework that structures the reading/writing part
of the day around four “blocks” of time. The blocks include
a comprehension block which has children actively reading stories
together or in small groups and working on specific key reading strategies
that strengthen their comprehension skills. There is also a making
words block during which children practice word wall words (high frequency
sight words) and several different phonetic activities. The writing
block is structured like a writing workshop where the teacher teaches
a short minilesson on a specific writing skill and models the writing
process for the children, and the rest of the time the students work
on their own individual stories/poems/letters/etc. Last, there is
a self-selected reading (SSR) block. During SSR, a large basket with
several different types of stories at varying levels is set on each
table. Students are allowed to choose whatever stories they want and
they read, read, read. The teacher calls students over one at a time
to read aloud while she takes notes on the student’s strengths/weaknesses. |
